Who can contribute

This site is meant to facilitate communications among staff at the TUG libraries. We encourage the participation of anyone and everyone on staff. If you have an idea for some information, please contact Marina Wan or Nick Dobbing and we will help you to get started.

What kind of information goes here:

Anything you want to communicate to TUG staff. The information that should go on this site could be varied: minutes of committee and task group meetings, relevant documents, interesting links to other web sites or resources, and any other work related information that could be of interest to staff.

Note: this site is mostly world-readable, which means that anyone on the planet with an Internet connection can read what's in it, with the exception of some password-protected documents.

Structure:

The staff web is located on staff.tug-libraries.on.ca. Files for each TUG group is stored in a directory on the server. For instance, the files of the Cataloguing group is kept in a directory named cat on the server. Owners and authors of the various sections can structure their sections in any way they wish underneath the section directory. However, do not delete the sub-directory "private" which can be used to store files of sensitive nature, or the file hd2.html which is to be included in other files as part of the header.

You can include the standard header in any file by entering the same "include" statements found in the group's homepage file. For example, the Cataloguing group's files may include these two "include" statements after the body tag:

	<!--#include virtual="/hd1.html" -->
	<!--#include virtual="/cat/hd2.html" -->
Rules:

In order to make this site successful, there are going to have to be some rules. It is our intention that the rules be ones that will make it less likely that people will experience the frustrations that can occur when a number of people are simultaneously contributing to and changing a common web site from remote locations.

  1. Do not change someone else's web page without permission.
  2. While you have a page in your local computer because you are making changes, leave behind a 'marker' to indicate that you have it. Before you copy the file to your computer, put a copy in the server's directory where the original is with the file extension .mnt. This way when someone wants to change a file, they will be able to tell that the file is already being used by someone else.
  3. If you need a change to the TUG Staff Web's homepage, please ask Marina, Cheryl or Nick to make the changes.
